Lt. Col. Martin Herford was commander of the 163rd Field ambulance wich advanced
into Holland with XXX Corps. On the 24rd of September he tried to cross the Rhine
with medical supplies for the 1st Airborne Division, at the other side of the river he
was captured and later brought to Apeldoorn where he helped to setup a hospital for
the wounded POW's in the barracks. When in October the wounded were transported to POW camps
in Germany he managed to escape. He swam across the Rhine near Heelsum and on the other
side of the river he was welcomed by a soldier of the 101st Airborne Division.
