A fascinating history of the 9th Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers from its
formation in 1787 up until 1960, mainly concentrating on World War II at Dunkirk,
Sicily, Italy and Arnhem, but also covering Palestine, Cyprus and Suez.
Tom Purves was born at Broxburn in Scotland, and educated at Boroughmuir in Edinburgh.
After leaving the Squadron he emigrated to Canada, where he spent some time working
for the Canadian Government as a "Smoke Jumper" (a parachute forest fire fighter).
He returned to the UK in 1966, taking further qualifications before becoming a
lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic.
