Spanhoe, an airfield in the English Midlands was home to the 315th Troop Carrier Group
for a little over a year during 1944 and 1945. During September, 1944 the C-47s
based at Spanhoe carried British, American and General Sosabowski's Polish paratroopers
to Holland as part of Operation MARKET-GARDEN, the largest airborne operation in history.
This is a Special, book, limited to 315 signed and numbered copies dedicated to the events
of that September, and published for the events of OPERATION SPANHOE 2008, when the
old airfield hosted a World War II weekend and air show, attended by British, American
and Polish Arnhem Veterans during the weekend of September 13-14, 2008. With much
new material, including never-published accounts of the Waal Crossing at Nijmegen
by members of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the story of Brigadier
"Shan" Hackett and his experience with the 315th Troop Carrier Group, and the story
of an unusual friendship between an American pilot and a Polish paratrooper that
spanned the period before, during and after the battle of Arnhem.
Born in the USA in 1951, he is a recognised expert in the field of Airborne Warfare,
particularly the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade at Arnhem.
He currently lives in New Orleans(2008).
