In The Battle Of Arnhem 17th To 26th September 1944.
Colin Cummings was born in Aylesbury and brought up and educated near Bristol.
He joined the RAF in 1963 and was commissioned the following year. He served
with the RAF's support helicopter force, mainly in the Far East,
from 1964 to 1969. On his return to the UK he began the first of many
appointments associated with computers and IT, which peppered his subsequent
employment in the Service.
During his service he helped pioneer a number of new concepts but perhaps the
most significant was his last. In the summer of 1990 he was posted to create
a team and then operate the new concept of multi-disciplinary support of
weapons systems: in his case the Jaguar aircraft- in the very week the type
was deployed to the Gulf conflict! He managed all aspects of support and
enhancement for the Jaguars thereafter and his team subsequently laid the
foundations for a series of improvements to the aircrafts' capability and
support which followed. He assumed similar logistic support responsibilities
for the Canberra aircraft.
After retirement from the RAF in 1994, he began work for a major management
consultancy and currently manages their UK IT procurement function. Besides an
interest in all aspects of things military, he is a lapsed rugby union referee
and an enthusiastic owner of German Shepherd Dogs.
This is his second book; the first, "Lost To Service", summarises accidents
to some 1100 RAF aircraft between 1959 and 1996. Two other books dealing with
the losses of 2500 aircraft between 1950 and 1958 are in the course of
preparation and a record of 6000 awards of the Distinguished Service Order
between 1939 and 1945 is planned.
